Planning a Cake Smash in Suffolk? Your Top 5 Questions Answered!

Your baby’s first birthday is a huge milestone worth celebrating — and what better way than with a fun, messy, joy-filled cake smash photoshoot? 🎂 As a specialist cake smash photographer in Suffolk, I know how exciting (and sometimes overwhelming!) it can be to plan the perfect session. From who brings the cake to what you should pack on the day, I’ve rounded up the most common cake smash questions I hear from families across Haverhill, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. This guide will help you feel totally prepared so you can relax and enjoy every giggle, grin and splatter of frosting.

Who Supplies the Cake?

At Yellow Blossom Photography, I take care of the cake for you! Each cake is:

  • Professionally baked
  • Designed to match your chosen theme or colours
  • Allergy-catered where possible

Prefer to bring your own? That’s absolutely fine, especially if your little one has specific dietary needs.

Do You Only Do Cake Smash Shots?

Not at all! A cake smash session includes:

  • Portraits first — clean, classic images of your baby before the fun begins
  • Cake smash fun — frosting, laughter, and plenty of mess
  • Optional bath splash — bubbles, splashes, and squeaky-clean smiles at the end

This way you’ll have a variety of images: timeless portraits and fun, messy memories.

Can I Bring Our Family Pet?

Yes! Pets are family too, and I love including them in sessions. Dogs are especially welcome in the studio, adding extra personality (and often comedy) to your little one’s birthday memories. Just let me know in advance so I can plan accordingly.

How Long Does a Cake Smash Session Last?

Most sessions last around 60 minutes (30 for mini sessions). This gives us plenty of time to capture portraits, cake fun, and bath splashes without rushing. The pace is always baby-led — I allow time for cuddles, feeds, or a reset if little ones get overwhelmed.

What Should I Pack for the Day?

Here’s a quick checklist to make your day stress-free:

  • A change of clothes for your baby (and possibly for you!)
  • Wet wipes, nappies & any comfort items
  • Snacks or a small drink for baby
  • Family outfits if you’d like to join in the portraits
  • Your chosen theme ideas (though I’ll have plenty of props waiting)

Why Book Early?

Cake smashes are popular for first birthdays in Suffolk and my Haverhill studio diary fills up quickly. I recommend booking at least 2–3 months before your baby turns one to secure your preferred date.
