What Should We Wear or Bring to Our Session?

One of the most common questions I get at Yellow Blossom Photography is: “What should we wear or bring?” The right outfits (and a little preparation) can make a big difference to your photos — helping them look timeless, flattering, and beautifully coordinated. Here’s my guide to choosing outfits and bringing the essentials for your maternity, newborn, or family photography session in Haverhill, Suffolk.

What to Wear for Maternity Photography

  • Solid, neutral, or soft tones – Think creams, blush pinks, muted blues, and earthy colours for a timeless look.
  • Fitted dresses or flowing gowns – Show off your bump in a way that feels comfortable. I have a selection of maternity gowns in my studio wardrobe that you’re welcome to use.
  • Coordinated, not matching – If including your partner or children, pick colours that work well together rather than identical outfits.

Avoid: Busy patterns, neon colours, and large logos — these distract from your bump and overall image.

What to Wear for Newborn Photography

  • For baby: Soft, neutral onesies or just a nappy (I provide wraps, blankets, and tiny outfits in my studio).
  • For parents & siblings: Light, simple clothing in soft tones. This keeps the focus on baby’s delicate features.
  • Barefoot or socks – For in-studio sessions, shoes aren’t usually needed.

Tip: Bring a spare change of clothes in case of spills or accidents — babies can be unpredictable!

What to Wear for Family Photography

  • Coordinate colours – Choose 2–3 main colours and work within that palette.
  • Comfort first – If you’re chasing little ones outdoors or sitting on the floor in the studio, make sure you can move freely.
  • Seasonal dressing – Light layers for spring/summer, cosy knits for autumn/winter.

Example palettes:

  • Summer: White, sage green, and soft denim
  • Autumn: Mustard, cream, and deep burgundy

What to Bring to Your Session

  • Snacks & drinks (especially for little ones)
  • Favourite toy or comforter – Helps children relax and can be included in the photos if special to them.
  • Wipes & nappies for baby sessions
  • Hairbrush or compact mirror for quick touch-ups
  • Your chosen outfits (if changing during the session)
  • Any sentimental props – A blanket made by grandma, a special book, or a cherished heirloom

Studio Perks – I’ve Got You Covered

For maternity and newborn sessions, my Haverhill studio wardrobe includes:

  • Maternity gowns in various styles
  • Wraps, hats, and headbands for newborns
  • Blankets, baskets, and props for styled setups

This means you can arrive with less to carry — and still enjoy a beautifully styled session.

Why Outfit Choice Matters

Clothing plays a huge role in your final images. The right choices:

  • Complement your skin tone and surroundings
  • Keep attention on faces and expressions
  • Create a cohesive look for albums and wall art

When in doubt, keep it simple, keep it comfortable, and keep it you.
