A cake smash might seem simple – baby, cake, camera – but there’s so much more behind creating a fun, relaxed session and getting gorgeous, memorable photos. Not all cake smashes are created equal, so before you book your photographer, here are a few important things to think about:
How much variety will I get in the final images?
It’s all well and good being promised “all the images,” but if they’re all virtually identical, what’s the point? A truly great session should give you a range of photos – different angles, genuine expressions, and little in-between moments that show your baby’s personality.
Is the setup custom-designed and photo-ready?
Cute props don’t always mean great pictures. Does your photographer know how to create sets that photograph beautifully, with good lighting and baby-safe materials?
Will the session reflect my baby’s personality?
You want someone who can gently guide the session to suit your little one’s mood and temperament – no pressure, no fuss, just genuine, happy moments.
Is the session designed to keep little ones happy and engaged?
Babies need breaks, distractions, and changes of pace. Is there a plan to switch things up and keep it fun for them from start to finish?
Do they offer a variety of props, toys, and entertainment for little ones?
Is there enough to capture your baby’s interest and spark some smiles? The right extras can make all the difference.
Can siblings or parents join in for a few photos?
Some of the most special moments come when families get involved. Can you jump in for a cuddle or include big brother or sister too?
Are the results consistently excellent – not just the highlights?
Beautiful portfolios are great, but can the photographer consistently deliver lovely, authentic images, no matter the child or the day?
A cake smash is a one-time milestone – it deserves thoughtful planning and a photographer who truly understands how to turn chaos into charm.
